Lee, is foam on the dipstick OK after a 50 miles drive? It seems to me that with the engine up to temp for that long that all the moisture in the crankcase should have been evaporated away.

True that foam in the crankcase (moisture) should be gone but if there's a lot of build-up on the dipstick, it may not disappear...I would just wipe that off for now and as long as it doesn't come back, you'll be fine- these cars like to be driven. At least once a week, you should take it out and drive interstate speeds for at least 20, if not 30 minutes to keep this from happening- of course, it's not as bad in the summer time as it is in the winter months.

I replaced the PCV, cleaned the dipstick tube really well and take longer highway drives and still get foam. I give up. I'm just driving it now.

Well I wiped off the dipstick yesterday and used pipe cleaners to clean the tube out so hopefully it's all gone now. Most of my drving up here is at like 60mph and it takes at LEAST 15 minutes to get anywhere, come on guys I live in NH, everythings spread way out. So I accidentally put reguar fuel in friday and almost instantly the ticking came back, guess premium it is :?

Ok so thoughts on this... I found a 96 850 GLT stick shift forsale right near me. It has high miles, 234,xxx but seems to be in good shape, just passed inpsection in feb. My one "concern" if you will is the rear main seal has been leaking 1/4 quart/month for about 2 years according to the owner. If I can get it for like $1,000 and keep my current 850T for parts do you think it's worth it? I am concerned about mine not passing inpsection due to the failed odometer. It's a requirement here in NH

Thanks guys!!!!

Hollis, how much can you wrench? It's a total pain but you can do the rear main seal yourself over a weekend- otherwise, you're looking at about a grand to lower the engine and split the transmission from the engine to change out that seal. Although, $1000 is tempting- offer him $750 as a starting point- if he laughs, then tell him the repairs are going to be outrageous- see what he comes down to.

Hahaha I like your thinking. Right now the asking price is $1,400 obo but like every week or two it drops about a hundred bucks. Idk, just a thought, I'd LOVE a manual Volvo.
