I took my 2001 V70 100k in for ETM service. In the past, I had the ETM replaced(35k), and the sw upgrade. Currently, the throttle is surging at stops and low speed approaches (pulling into the garage). Never stalls like previous ETM issues. There are no codes found.
I was told that the oil trap box was clogged. The repair is cleaning and a new filler cap. $780.00.
-Does this sound logical?
-$780 sounds very expensive.
-What issues can I expect if this is not repaired, and urgency of need?
-How is this related to oil changes, which have been performed at every 3K?
Many thanks,
2001 V70 Clogged Oil Trap box or ETM
$780 is a bargain... from the dealer. I was just quoted $850 for the same job, after my sw upgrade. I ended up pulling my trap, which all-in-all wasn't 'that' bad of a chore. So far I've found no restrictions. Mine is still tore apart, trying to understand why I have high crankcase pressure.
High crankcase pressure can lead to progressive oil leaks, first through the oil cap, then blown seals.

I'd say it is the ETM...the surging should be all the time (not up and and down) or not at all if it were your PcV system.

Thank you for the pointers.
I had the dealer replace the oil trap box and they cleaned all of the hose and nipples. The good news is the total cost was lower @ $580, and the car is idling properly.
I did not know this at the time of repair, but they also cleaned the throttle body and replaced the throttle body gasket.
The problem is I don't know if the results are from the oil trap box work or the throttle cleaning. I suspect they did the oil trap work and the car was still malfunctioning. Then they performed the throttle work. As a result, I spent $580, which was not needed.
The dealer claims the throttle must be removed in order to perform the oil trap repair. Therefore, the need for the new gasket. IS THIS ACCURATE?
Is there a site which has a drawing of these engine parts and their location on the engine? I am sure that it sound basic, but it would resolve my issue.
Thank you

No. The throttle body does not need to be removed, but the intake manifold (that the throttle body is bolted to), does, and Volvo recomends that you use a new gasket for that, but I reused mine. The dealer claims the throttle must be removed in order to perform the oil trap repair. Therefore, the need for the new gasket. IS THIS ACCURATE?
This shows the oil trap in the area under the intake manifold:

Although it's for a different car, this link will give you an idea of what's involved in cleaning/replacing the oil trap: http://lakesidedp.com/uploadpics/pcv/

The main issue on P2 PCV/ETM issues is the vacuum source to the oil trap from the intake. A hollow screw attaches to the intake under where the dipstick tube mounts. The ETM then gets dirty faster and surging and other symptoms are present. The ETM's are covered for internal failures but PCV caused issues are maintenance and not covered. Unfortunately one must service the throttle and/or PCV before a failed ETM can be determined. The ETM and PCV should both be serviced if you are footing the bill. Check out all your available shops in your area. These are privately run businesses and do things very differently.

All,
Thanks for the insightful posts.
I suspect I paid for work that was unnecessary, and in the course of repair, the throttle body was cleaned (warranty work). I believe the throttle body was not cleaned until after the oil trap was replaced and the defect was still present. Unfortunately, the dealer is holding all of the cards, and the two repairs are interconnected. I don't have solid proof, but the events and discussions with the dealer lead me to believe so.
I am good for 30k miles. The ETM has been replace and/or cleaned at this interval. I will have another/different major system failure(s) before this time, and will retire this car before its time.
It is a shame that this car has been a painful and expensive experience. My 1997 850 has been great.
Thanks to all.

I agree with you pjlapl. To clean the throttle body on a non-turbo takes ten minutes, a screw driver, rag, and a can of carb cleaner. At the stop light today my tach was showing 730 rpms and steady.
