2001 S60 2.4, brake check light on!

Hi,
2001 S60 2.4, brake check light on!
Yesterday, when I was on the way back home, I noticed " Brake Check Light" on first time but the brake still works (honestly, I am scared to drive it now), so I was wondering if it's time to change the brake pedals or what.
Can someone tell me what's going on?

Well you shouldn't have to change the pedals. Maybe the pads and rotors. At the very least the brakes should be inspected. Do you have a code reader so you can see what codes are logged?

But the brake check message is on only when I put my foot on the brake, so can I use a normal code reader to read the code?

I don't know if it would store a code or not. How's your brake fluid level?

I just checked the brake fluid level, and it's ok. So I guess the pads have to be replaced.
Honestly, I didn't do much work by myself. Is it hard? If it's not too expensive, I prefer to take it to a shop. Do you have clue how much it is gonna cost? Shall I come to a Volvo dealer?

No, it's not hard, but it does require some attention to detail. If you're just buying pads for front & rear, figure about $120 - $160. Rotors are between $40-$100 each. Complete kits are available for about $360. If you pay a garage to do it you'll have labor on top of that. If you have a dealer do it, figure about $1,000 or so (pads and rotors installed).

Hi!

What about just test brake lights in the rear? A problem could be with the brake relay or fuse or lamp. The best could be check it against a white wall in night. Maybe a central lamp works and side lamps not or vice versa...
