Considering a 2000 S80

Everything on the Volvo S80. Sometimes called an "executive car", the S80 was Volvo's top-of-the-line passenger car. P2 platform.

Considering a 2000 S80

Post by jbrown122 »

There's a nice, dark blue S80 a few miles from me. It has 145k miles and a new transmission, timing belt was changed in the past.
Haven't gotten a chance to drive it, but what do you guys think?

Is it a turbo, how much is it, how good of a mechanic are you, and how much money do you have to spend on repairs?

It is not turbo, it is only $4800.
The thing is, I might try to sell my V70 and put some money towards that.
I can do most things myself, mainly with some help from the guides on here and other sites.
And, I'm really not willing to spend much on repairs, I'm hoping I can get some trouble free miles, the car is in 'excellent' condition.

I would look up the private seller value on kbb.com and try to undercut that as much as possible. You will probably be doing some repairs to it at some point.

Check to see if the ETM has been changed (should have a yellow sticker on the front if it has). If it hasn't been changed yet, you are looking at doing it in the not too distant future and the extended warranty is about to run out.

Also, if the owner has records, see if the PCV system has been serviced and the strut mounts changed.

I'd take it in to a reputable private Volvo shop or a dealer and have it inspected so you don't wind up buying a pig-in-a-poke. It might cost $100-$200, but will be worth it so you know what you are getting.

The 2000s are better than the 1999s, but not as good (reliability-wise) as subsequent years.

I checked kbb.com a few days ago, it says $4,200.
If, and when, I take a look at the car, I'll check for the sticker, service records, etc.
The inspection seems like a good idea as well.
Thanks!

Jbrown,

I bought a 2000 s80 t6 that had 118K on it last year.
after 1 week i bought it, the radiator fan went out. i had to replace it. 300 part-150 labor at the dealer.
i would recommend you to check the engine mounts, i had to replace 2 of them them as well (top & lower passenger side).
i also replaced the coolant sensor which was around 25 bucks.
nothing major yet.
there was a sticker on the timing belt cover that indicated the millage at timing belt was changed. (105K)
your timing belt should be fine for another 50K (100K intervals).
also, the volvo dealer here in New orleans don't check the cars for buying purpose. your dealer might do it, i don't know...

i hope you will enjoy your new volvo...
