S80 1999 Chassis VIN no.

Everything on the Volvo S80. Sometimes called an "executive car", the S80 was Volvo's top-of-the-line passenger car. P2 platform.

S80 1999 Chassis VIN no.

Post by harrr0 »

Hi, I'm looking for parts for my S80, but I keep getting asked what VIN number I have. Usually 44276, 44277, or 44278. I don't know how to find this out. Can someone help me? Thanks.

Look through the bottom of the windshield on the driver's side. There's a metal tag riveted there with the VIN # on it. Also, it's probably on your insurance card and registration.

I don't think that it's the right number. My VIN ends in 045849. These numbers seem universal...

Where are you looking for parts?

Sometimes they mean "this part fits up to VIN# XXXXX, then this part fits from VIN#YYYYY." It's for when they make changes or upgrades in the cars during a manufacturing run.

The belt for example: http://www.fcpgroton.com/product-exec/p ... gory_id/98

The part where it says "Volvo S80 multi rib serpentine belt. This belt drive all of the pulleys in the front of the engine. On 1999 models, this only fits vehicles before chassis 044276."

That's where I'm confused. Because some of them have ones that say 44276 or 44277... I need to figure this out, because I need to buy a new P/S pump, since the belt stripped all of the ribs on the pulley and took it out as well. I was buying the pump from a local seller, and they say it fits in chassis no. 044278...

OK, I think I see the source of the confusion. The last 6 digits of the 17-character VIN is the so-called "chassis code". You said that the last 6 digits of your VIN is 045849, so your "chassis code" is 045849. Therefore, that belt isn't the correct belt for your car because your chassis code is higher ("after") 044276. Chassis codes are assigned in sequence by the factory, the newer the car is in the series, the higher the chassis code.

The chassis number isn't so much a single number that describes a family of a make and year, it's a number that uniquely identifies your chassis. The parts are marked as suitable for cars before/after a particular chassis number. So for your seller to say it's for chassis 044278 is insufficient. You need to know if it's for chassis up to [i.e. less than and including] 044278 (in which case, it will not fit your car), or for chassis after 044278 (in which case, you're good to go).

Then it won't fit your car, since your chassis # is higher than 44278.

Now that's the thing that I am really confused about...So will 044277 fit my car? Because 044276,7,8 are the only numbers that appear when I try to buy a part.

Look for the ones that say "fit chassis number 44277 on," "chassis numbers after 44278," something like that.
