volvo s40 2000 model 94000miles

Hi can any body give me some advice i have a rattling noise on the top of my engine it souds almost as if it is something todo with the cam system as it is irregular i also noticed i had very low oil and have no evedence of a oil leak any advice will be gratefully accepted David

The noise might be the tappets, but I hope not because they are a bear to change. Check your oil more often and keep it topped up. You could have a plugged-up PCV system that is causing the oil consumption. Have you had it serviced?

hi thank you for the advice i havent had it serviced but i plan to do so asap do you know aprox how much it would cost to fix.

I would assume several hundred dollars since they have to remove the cam cover, then the cams, then fit new tappets to each cylinder individually. It's a lot of work. You could try a higher weight oil and see if that helps with the noise. Also, you might want to take it to an independet Volvo shop for diagnosis.

PS. I had a Mitsubishi that had hydraulic (auto-adjusting) tappets that made noises. I had them all changed out for new ones and they still made the noises. I decided to just live with it.
