XC70 2001 keyless remote problem

Post by gunnabby54 »

I have a Volvo XC70 with a keyless remote (5 button) that doesn't appear to work. I bought the car used and it came with 2 keys and 1 remote. I thought it was just the battery, change it, still no luck. My husband took the remote to the dealer who said it was working (car was not with him). Is there a way to reprogram it or get a remote that does work? Please help.

Try locking and unlocking the driver's side door twice (maybe even three times) with your actual key and see if this resets things and helps the FOB to work again.

Tried that but no luck...anything else I can try? Can I get a different remote or is the problem in the car not sensing the remote.

Probably the later- you'll need to take the FOB in with your car and your car might need reprogramming (contrary to popular belief, it's not the key programmed to the car, but the other way around).

That sounds expensive...would it be cheaper to install an aftermarket system?

No...and you'll have less headaches with the Volvo FOB once it's up and working- sorry, but you're probably going to have to bite the bullet here. If you have several dealers near you, call around, explain that you need the car programmed to your FOB and ask what they charge for this- it shouldn't be a very difficult or time consuming procedure (though, it could cost you upwards of $120 or so... maybe even slightly more- you'll be paying for a download as well as their labor charge).

OK, talked to my local dealer. He said that they could try to reprogram the car but that it only works about 10% of the time and when it doesn't work that everything won't work. That the key will no longer start the car and then it would cost $1000+ to fix. Does that sound right or are they trying to scam me?

Sorry, I've never heard of that, but who knows... sounds to me like they're just trying to sell you one of their expensive FOBs...call another dealer, even in another city and see what they say- no, better yet, call Darell Waltrip Volvo in TN and ask for Don or Jamie in the parts dept. (they have been very kind to our forum with discount genuine Volvo parts) and see what they say about this.
