Volvo 960 1997 Turn signal fuses keep blowing
Hi, I'm refering first to a question from 31 July 2008 from Lynne about the turn signal fuses burning out in her '98 960. I have a '97 960 that has the same or very similar problem. Did you or she ever resolve that problem??? When sitting still, my car has correctly operating left and right signals and the four way flashers work like they should. I can drive the car for a short distance and the turn signal (ussually the left one) will start to sort of buzz instead of click and if I don't turn it off immediately, the fuse will blow. Sometimes while the car is sitting, I can pull out the four way switch/relay and the fuse will blow immediately (no buzzing). What's the best way to diagnose such a strange and sporatic problem. I replaced the relay and also the turn signal stalk with no improvement. Any help would be greatly appreciated- it's a great car but I can't get it inspected or drive it as is. Thanks, Bill

Welcome to Matthew's Volvo Site.
As you have replaced the relay and the stalk it would seem that you have an intermittent short circuit to earth (ground). Where does the buzzing sound come from? Is it behind the relay?
Bill.

The "buzzing" actually seems to be the relay itself- the noise it makes changes from the click, click of the turn signals to a sort of very fast clicking or buzzing, but not like the noise it would make if one turn signal bulb was burned out. I have tried to follow the wires under the dash from the relay but of course it's difficult as they disappear into the wiring harness. Thanks, Bill

The wiring harnesses under the dash on the 940 are usually bulletproof so any problem should be outside of the harness.
Have you recently changed any of the turn signal bulbs? Volvos can be picky about bulbs being changed in pairs.
Bill.

My car is a 960 rather than a 940. I thought I heard that they did have some electrical problems with the 960 and especially under the dash. I will check the bulbs to see if they could be the problem. Any thoughts? Thanks, Bill
Ran into this problem left turn signal blows fuse up under the dash the green wire to the back of the instrument cluster rubs through on the steering column pull cluster and check green wire poor routing took hours to find even made the hazard switch buzz !
