'87 740 difficult HOT START
'87 740 difficult HOT START
I've managed to get this car running decently (posts re: starts, idles, falters, repeat) with one exception. When the engine is hot, it's hard to start it. First one, then two etc. cylinders and with patience, all four get going and off I go. Chilton's says "defective choke". Which is, um, where? Is there another cause I should investigate---like the temp. sensor or something? Thanks in advance, ccb222

As you have found out there is no choke on a fuel injection system. The manual is probably referring to a carb version which was still available in certain markets in '87.
Check your battery connections very carefully for corrosion. Thoroughly clean them, the connectors on the cables, all washers, studs and, in the case of the earth (ground) cable, the mounting point on the body. Then cover them with an anti-corrosion compound. There is also an earth strap from the engine/gearbox that is always overlooked on routine maintenance. Check and clean this. If the earth straps look suspect replace them. Any earth failure, total or partial, can play havoc with electronic systems and can lead to the failure of the car's engine management computer and/or mass airflow sensor.
Also check those used injectors you put in for leakage and correct operation.
Bill.
