850 '97 roof rack suggestions

Post by peffley »

My search for "roof rack" didn't come up with much. My '97 850 has no factory racks or rain gutters. Was was wondering what is best brand or works best for these roofs?

Thule, Yakima, Inno?

Can you even get the Volvo OEM Rails? This would be nice for looks and I could tackle my peeling black / chrome strip up there at the same time I installed factory Rails / Racks (assuming that is where they would be mounted).

FYI: Inno Racks is a "newer in the USA market" company from Japan (since 2003) that is apparently good quality but lower priced than Thule and Yakima. They don't have "mounts / feet" for a gutterless 850 (yet?) but alot of their accessories fit the other brands.

Thanks again all!

Thule makes a set that fit right up into the factory holes above your doors.

I see them on Craigslist and eBay all the time.

Sure. In fact you probably should go OEM. The 850 up through 2000n V70 will bolt right on.
Volvo cross bars, OEM and other aftermarket goodies will work with them.
There are already threaded inserts under that wasted black strip of yours on the roof. Easy, breezy!

Volvo made a thin (and much more attractive, IMHO) rail for the earlier wagons,

and then started using a fatter rail on the XC 70's.

They'll both work.

Search eBay for "Volvo Roof" and you'll usually find a few sets around.

After seaching all the scrap yards, I have finally found myself a set of racks from a '95. I paid $125CAN and they came with the cargo rails.

The stealership was asking $650 without the cargo rails.

well, i have a question about this thread only one step further.

will these slim Euro rails being discussed fit on my 1998 S70 GLT?

i am desperately wanting to transport my bike and kayak around but want to avoid a thule rack. not only are they pretty pricey, but i think they look kind of ugly, particularly on sedans.

There is a load rack you can buy (I have it for my S70) that doesn't involve the eurorails that go the length of the car- they aren't expensive and they work fine: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/VOLVO-NE ... ccessories
You can find them much cheaper if you take your time and look around. I think even www.bortonvolvo.com was selling them for less- or you might try Darrel Waltrip Volvo in Franklin, TN- they will ship and their prices are very good...ask for Jamie or Don in the parts dept. and tell them you're on this forum for a discount.

thanks for the tips.

so this one just comes ready to fit right on my s70?

what "type" of rack is it, actually from Volvo?

round or square bars?

i still want to get the euro rails from a salvaged 850 (if they'll fit) but this option may very well end up being what i have to do.

Yes, it comes ready to fit right on...there are small holes right in the upper door seal area that a pin from these racks fit right into- the rack (or rather load bars) are from Volvo and they are rectangular in shape.
