850 '95 AT shift lock malfunction

Post by amazon »

Out of the blue my 850 can't be shifted out of neutral. I tried the manual shiftlock procedure as per the owners manual and that won't work either. Where do I start troubleshooting? "Darn new fangled cars!"

If that doesn't work, it's usually related to the key not being inserted or turned all the way, or your brake pedal not being pushed, or your brake sensor at the pedal being bad- try all of those things.

I have replaced the ignition about a month ago because it had the problem of not fully returning to the run position after starting. The shift lock stayed engaged then until one just moved the key slightly back. This doesn't seem to be related to that. I like the idea of the brake sensor since the manual over ride button doesn't work either when the shift lock is malfunctioning. How hard is the brake sensor to get to for a guy with a not so great back? Thanks for the advice. TD
