2002 s60 t5 front end groaning

Post by jayhev »

I own a 2002 Volvo S60 T5 2.3 63000 miles and it has developed a groan in the front end when the car is above say 25mph. It seems to get worse when the wheel is turned to the left. Would this be the drive axle or more likely the front hub? Also do both axles need to be changed when you do the job? All help appreciated!!!!

its more than lightly a drive shaft universal joint, just behind the disc that is causing the groan,if the rubber boot around the joint is ripped this is sure sign it has lost its lubricant and running dry, jack the car up either side and compare,-there also is the possibility it may be a wheel bearing but id look at the joint first, hope this helps

You are most likely correct, but if that's not it, jack your car up and turn the wheels by hand and see if you can replicate the sound to some degree- really sounds like a bad wheel hub (hub bearings) to me... only solution is a new wheel hub.

Thanks! I checked the boots and they look ok with no rips. I bet its the wheel hub!

Jevhev, I had a groaning coming from the front right wheel a while back and thought it was either a bad universal joint or wheel hub and it turned out to be a bad tie rod.

Well, problem fixed! It turns out it was a driver side wheel hub(bearing). Did a search on this website and found a nice tutorial on how to change it. not a bad job at all!
