Need to replace the battery on my 98 S70, the book at the store calls for a smaller 750/590.....but there is a bigger battery for the S90 which is 850/amp. Can I put the bigger (S90) battery on my S70? will it damage anything?
Thanks
mw

If it physically fits it will be fine. When it comes to cold cranking amps the more the better. Current is drawn from the battery, not forced from it.
You will need your radio code and you may need to cycle your alarm to get the car to start after the battery is replaced.

I replaced the same battery in my '99 S70 a couple of weeks ago. The "correct" smaller battery at Costco was around $54. I then noticed the bigger battery was exactly the same form factor except longer and only cost 3 bucks more, for almost twice the capacity. I checked my tray to see if the larger one would fit and it did! So I immediately bought the bigger one!
Regarding the radio code and fuel trim settings, I plugged a power pack into the cigarette lighter, with the key on accessory setting, to maintain everything. Helps prevent sparking at the terminals of the new battery too when you hook up the cables.

The radio code is normally on a credit card sized card in the owners documents. If you don't have it you need to contact the dealer with your VIN number. They should provide it at no charge but they may require that you come in person and provide proof of ownership.

the smaller battery is Group 47
the larger battery is Group 48
the stock battery tray can accomodate both and there is really no reason to get the smaller battery as the cost is nearly identical.
For the Costco customers of MVS, a Fitment Code 10 battery = Group 48. Made by Johnson Controls(the largest battery manufacturer in the USA), it is perhaps the best battery bargain for Volvos. Unfortunately, my local Costo does not carry fitment code 10s!

I live in the SF Bay area where there is a Costco every five miles or so. The required batteries are in their book. I went to 3 Costcos with no stock of the required battery. At the third Costco I asked in the tire center, "Is there a Costco in the Bay Area that carries these batteries" (i.e. I finally stopped and asked directions). He looked up in his computer and said yes, the Mountain View Costo is the one that carries the Volvo batteries.db130 wrote:the smaller battery is Group 47

If it's all you have right now and the battery meets the minimum CCA of the s70 and it physically fits and the terminals fit. It should work. You would have to find a way of securing the other battery though if the hold down doesnt fit. I don't have the specified group in right now myself and all is well.
Always first off the line, while all the cool people are still staring at their phones.
