1997 GLT burned bulb indicator

1997 Volvo GLT turbo 71,000 miles
I have a bulb out indicator light that only comes on when I apply the brakes. This began several months ago and was intermittant, would come on when I hit the brakes and may go away for a week or so. Now problem is constrant but again only when brake is applied. I have checked the brake lights and all are in working order, I replaced the brake bulbs with silver colored bases, no change. I have checked brake switch, cleaned bulb sockets and all lights(park, tail, head lights) are in working order, any Ideas?

Check the center mount brake lights or the spoiler if you have one. If all of the lamps - and on the center mount it can be difficult to tell - then the lamp monitoring module is going bad. The monitor module is not known for a lot of problems but the contacts on the center brake light are dropping like flies.
