Hello,

I posted before about this, but wanted to see if I can get any more feedback. I was in the process of replacing my alternator when I found the vacuum line next to my alternator melted in two. I assumed this was the reason why my check engine light was on for fuel mixture too rich. I bought a new boot and connected the line to an extra port on the vacuum tree and the nipple on the side of the engine next to the alternator. I wasn't able to find where the other end of the line went behind the headers and my local volvo dealership (Rochester, NY) was no help whatsoever just telling me I would have a hard time getting it back on. Anyway, my check engine light went back on assuming because the one end of the vacuum line isn't plugged into the correct place. Is this true?

Any thoughts would be great.

Thanks

I'm assuming that you're talking about non-turbo model.
Anyway...the other end of that vacuum elbow, which you replaced,is going to the nipple on the flame trap, not to the vacuum tree.
I replaced mine about 2 months ago and it wasn't easy.

As I recall there is a hard plastic line that runs out to the elbow that falls off on all of them - it is as bad as the line that goes to the PTC nipple in that regard. If you ran a new line to the vacuum tree just cap off the old hard line and the metered air should come back into proportion with the MAF and the O2 sensor.

I don't fully understand the physics (even though I have a physics minor) of the line on the end of the intake manifold - it may be a MAF compensation for when the wastegate opens. I haven't taken the time to study the vacuum system since I have been able to just hook the lines back up - secure it - and clear my codes.

Stylin motors silicon hoses and zip ties will fix the problem for good.

To Misha's point - neither of my N/A models even have have that line but it may be emissions code dependent.

Yes there is a thin plastic vacuum line that runs out to the elbow.

If that elbow is broken, unmetered air is comming into intake causing rich mixture and turns on the CEL.

ok thank you. I'll first try to plug the vacuum port near the flame trap.

NO...you need to plug the vacuum line from intake manifold(near the alternator) to the flame trap. :!:
