Post by madcyc64 »

Hi to everybody , I have 1997 volvo 960 when the engine is idling oil is shooting up from the dipstick and the intake. I think it's the piston rings.

Welcome to Matthew's Volvo Site.

How long is it since the Positive Crankcase Ventilation (PCV) system was checked/cleaned? If this is blocked, even partially, it will create pressure in the crankcase and blow oil out of the dipstick tube.

This engine was a salvage engine I pulled from a yard in PA. I was thinking that because it had not been run in a while water my have gotten to the to the piston rings.

This definitely sounds like you have a clogged up PCV. I would take a look at getting the PCV system replaced.

Only if the top of the engine was open to the elements or the head gasket had gone. However, water on the piston rings wouldn't cause the oil to come out of the dipstick tube.

The PCV unit is on the US driver's side of the engine and incorporates a flame trap which does need to be kept clean, or renewed if it is too badly choked.

To remove the flame trap twist the casing approx 15mm to the left to release the bayonet fitting then withdraw the trap. It is also advised on this engine to remove the oil filler cap and, using an airline, blow through the hoses of the PCV. The oil should be changed after this operation as it may have become contaminated.
