I have a used 99 S80 - just purchased 6/04 w/50k. Had to return it to selling dealer w/in 3 days due to Emissions System Service Required message coming on as well as check engine light. Dealer took to Volvo shop for repairs.
Both lights have come on again intermittently and have turned themselves off. Seems to happen immediately after getting gas. Took it in a few months ago and tech said codes showed evaporation leakage, did smoke test, replaced parts, and reset. Came on yet again a month or so later again after filling the tank. My husband noted that the gas cap appeared to be stripped, as he could pull it off without turning it, after putting it on & hearing 3 clicks. So, we purchased a new gas cap which appeared to have a better seal. Didn't rectify itself.
Have also received the ABS messages and the "pull over safely" messages too. They seem to reset themselves.
After reading this forum, it appears that the Emissions System/check engine messages are a common issue. Why doesn't Volvo do a recall??? I saw some TSBs about it, but usually dealers don't really honor those...
Also, how can I reset the codes for Emissions/Check Engine, when it's obviously a "bug". I've tried the trip knob/ignitition II setting, but didn't work. Also tried time knob/ignition II setting - same result - am I doing something wrong?
Other than that, love the car - performs great and does suprisingly well in the snow!

I have had the same problems. Loose gas cap was the original cause due to the gas tank being under vaccum prossure and the loose cap caused a air leak in the vaccum system. Subsequently it has reoccured after an emission check. I have rest the check emissions system warning repeatedly using an OBDII scanner I bought for $80. That said, I too am concerned as to why the check emission system warning continues.

Just to clarify, do you turn off the engine first, then fill up with gas? I only ask because you don't mention that. The code will appear if the engine is running while you remove the gas cap.
I think you have to take the car in to get that code reset, but I'm not certain.

I've had the same problem with my S80 T since I bought the car in 2002. I have had it in the shop at least 7 times for the "emission system service required" and the check engine light. Each time they "diagnosed" it as something different, each time taking between 50 and 200 from me (and this was with the extended warranty) After all that, they now tell me (2 air flow sensors, 3 "there's nothing wrong we can find, so we reset the codes" and 2 the gas cap is loose) that there is some corrsion on the gas tank from some strap that lies over the tank. Sounds like their problem, wouldn't you say? It will cost between 700 and 800 to repair, and Volvo won't cover it..... It seems as though it doesn't run the evap test when the gas tank stays over 1/2 full. I am interested in knowing if there is a way to reset the code myself, so I don't have to fight with the dealer again. Anyone know how?

THat intermittand ABS thing was a bad abs unit, the dealership that sold it to me used at 67,000 replaced it for me. the couldn't figure out the emiss sys service either.
I took it to the V-shop and they identified a bad o-ring seal on one of my fuel sending units, fixed and returned in 2-monthw with same symptome, but noe occasional smell of gas after fueling up and cooling off in garage. it god "bad" enough for me to return, the fuel pump sending unit had to be replaced. $400 later, the probles was completely solved and I havent had the probled for the last 30,000 miles.
note,
my 99-s80 has a few more notes on it with 110,000miles. To date, with all the problems it has had, it still has a pretty good cost of ownership, and is unbelievable comfortable. no power, but comfey. with little things here and there, it is still way better than the note of a new car, and when things are fixed new, it'll be 200,000 before i'll have to fixem (gain 9i hope).

Yep, been down this road with my 2000 S80 also. Spent well over $2000 in four different shops trying to nail it. Finally found someone who knew what he was doing.
There are (I think) four oxygen sensors in this thing; two of the four had failed on my car. Once these were replaced (another $1k), it's been fine. It's been about 6 mos now, and this is the longest this POS has run without a host of error messages.
