Fuel Guage not working 1998 V70 XC

Hi,

I have a 1998 V70XC and the fuel guage has stopped working. Any ideas as to what I might check. It started out working after driving for a while but now it has stopped working and I dont want to run out of gas during the morning commute and have the world upset with me for running out of gas

on the highway. Thanks

Is the trip computer still calculating the miles until empty? If it is, then it is probably just the gauge itself and the low fuel light will still come on at 50 miles till empty.

If it is not computing the miles until empty, then you will need to replace the sending unit in the gas tank.

My car does not have a trip computer that shows how may k's till empty - the odometer works fine. Where do I find the gas tank sensor?...is it built into the fuel pump? Thanks in advance

how long as this been happening? forgetting to turn the car to the accessories only or off position when fueling can mess up the way the car reads how full the gas tank is. just a thought.

Hi, It has been happening for a couple of weeks now. It was intermitent and now full time. I always turn the car off when I re fuel - Cheers

I have the same problem on my 1998 V70 XC. I just had the fuel pump (which includes one of the two sending units) and it did not fix the problem. My mechanic tested both sending units and they were functioning perfectly. He then tested the gauge from the Volvo diagnostic system and the system could move the fuel gauge, so he said there is a connection problem somewhere in the car. The gauge had worked some of the time before stopping completely. A good wiring diagram would be helpful. The fuel pump/sending unit will run you $300-$600 depending on where you get it from and expect at least 9 hours of shop labor to do the job.
