rack n pinion question

I have a 2000 s80 t-6, united states. the steering rack is leaking. One dealer informs me that the rack replacement also requires a software update. Another dealer says no update is needed. I am ASE certified master technician for 21 years - general repair with little Volvo experience - funny since I own this one. Is there a necessary software update for this repair? This car does have the speed variant rack n pinion. Any help greatly appreciated.

Don't know myself so can't say for sure, but FWIW the Haynes manual doesn't mention anything about reprogramming. Just says there's an extra connector for the ones with "speed-sensitive steering".

There is no software update for the steering rack. Volvo also calls it steering gear. Mine was leaking a quart every 40 miles. I just had it done this week on my S80 by a Indy shop. Dealer wanted $1100 for part and $700 for installation. Indy got used part for $300 and installed it for $450. It is alot of work. The car sub assembly must be dropped and the engine supported to replace it.

Did you fill it with ATF or a quality Power Steering Fluid?

filled with petosin hf11s i believe... OE recommended.
