00 V70XC Oil Sump Seal Replacement
I went through the seal replacement today. It took about 10 hours for a first-timer. The second time will probably be a 3-hour job. After putting all the bolts back on, I cross threaded the two inner long bolts which are mounted on the transmission side. They went in but not all the way tight. So I decided to remove and tap them. I inserted a couple of washers just to make sure they are tight. Nonetheless, I could not torque them to 12.5 ft-lb, but they were tight enough not to loosen by vibration. After everything was ready, I started the engine and noticed a tapping noise lasting for several seconds. Eventually, the tapping noise went away. I went outside to look and saw two long bolts dropped on the driveway. It appears that these two bolts were hitting the flywheel. I went on for a 20-minute drive and did not notice any oil leak afterward. Do you guys think it's okay to drive like that without any oil leak eventually? The pan is held on by about 20-30 bolts. There is a post in volvoforums.com (http://volvoforums.com/forum/showthread ... 452&page=2) with similar problem, but there was no end result posted. Here is the photo of the two bolts. They hit the flywheel pretty bad (one was rounded to almost a point and the other has a flat side if look closer). I am going to drive it to work tomorrow and check for oil leak when I get home. I will update this post soon after.

Try to angle the bolts in more toward the center of the engine. I think you just missed the real bolt hole and tried to thread them into a channel between the block and the transmission.
Been there, done that, got the T-shirt.

Do you think I need to get two new bolts or just tap them again and reuse? Does this mean that it's a good possibility that I did not stripped the threads on the block? What about driving "as is" if they were actually stripped? Thanks for a quick response.

Chances are the bolts are just fine, they are steel and the block is aluminum.
My bet is that you don't need to re-tap anything - just get the bolts lined up with the original hole. You will feel like you are putting the bolt in crooked to get it right.
