Re: question for Ozark Lee or MiJ about scan tool
My question about these cheap scanners is: will they retrieve the correct mileage from the car?

OBD II's won't retrieve mileage on 850's after '94. For that you need a VST (Volvo Scan Tool). I'm not sure about later model Volvo's.NightTrain wrote:My question about these cheap scanners is: will they retrieve the correct mileage from the car?

For reading correct mileage from your car (after '95)you'll need volvo scan tool even on later models. That tool only have Volvo dealerships and sometimes even they could tell you that is impossible to do it, because they don't know how to use their scan tool.
Great part of Volvo dealerships(99%) can do that without problem(because they know how to use their tool).

MaxiScan tool just dropped to $25 at Amazon. It was $40 as recently as May 2009. If you buy it, just click that link below and you're set. MVS will get credit.

Must the "check engine" light go on or any malfunction light in order for a code reader to return any code results?

I used this one.....https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001MT ... oh_product
I had a laptop laying around and figured I could use it for something other than surfing, so I decided to go this route. It's a little more expensive than a handheld scanner, but provides more data. I can also get a software upgrade for another 20 bucks, but for now the shareware version works for me.
