2004 V-70 Idle Problem

Post by jsturt »

2004 Volvo V70 with 100k miles is experiencing an intermittent stalling problem when coming to a stop or slowing to make a turn. Normally, when almost stopped, the engine RPMs drop to around 500 then promptly raises to 750. Sometimes the engine RPMs continue to drop to around 400 resulting in a stall.

Otherwise, the non-turbo engine runs great. The plugs have been changed with no improvement. I have been told by another 2004 V-70 owner that he experienced the same problem and it was corrected by the dealer installing an updated ECM program. When I call the dealers, they are not aware of this issue.

Does anyone have knowledge or experience with a similar problem? Has there been any ECM programming changes for the idle speed? Any other suggestions of potential causes?

Thanks

Think this sounds like a throttle body problem to me. Volvo has had a long lasting problem with that and they usually take care of that free under a unwritten warranty upto 250000 miles I believe because they have had so many problems with that over the years. The service manager said that about the 250,000 miles. This might have been on my 1998 XC70 instead but they fixed it at no cost to me. They just take it apart and clean it.
My 2001 S80 was fluctuating alot and that was the problem.
I am a firm believer in fuel injector cleaners when ever I have the slightest problem like this. I recommend a product called sea foam sold at walmart in the automotive section at the lowest price....about 6.99. almost 10 bucks at autoparts stores.
Always put it in at the pump to get the best results.

I had a problem when in gear, but not in park, with a flux in the idle. It took awhile to determine the PCV system was clogged. The indi dealer felt a strong vacuum when opening the engine oil cap. That was the hint to him. This was about 100,000mi.

I also began cleaning the throttle body every 10K. Just remove the four bolts. put a rag in one end and spray the tb cleaner, wipe it down till you see the difference, then put the rag in the other end and spray away. This takes about 15 min.

I hope this helps.

Hello, To Jsturt: My problem was similar (rough disengagement upon slowing down-lots of specific details) though I didn't think of it as a idle problem per se. Engine ran fine but a Volvo dealer (Almartin in Shelburne, VT) suggested a TCM (Transmission Control Module) download. In short it worked. To Romort628: It won't be the ETM because Jsturt's car is an '04; well clear of the bad mylar ETMs. To tcatlanta: What did the indie do to cure your clogged PCV system? I've been told that people who don't change their oil (ESPECIALLY in TURBOS) run the risk of filling their oil seperator box with sludge. This is why I use synthetic oil even though my non-turbo doesn't need it. Kira
