How do you drain and replace the differential fluid and do you put the GL-5 synthetic fluid?

The car has a bevel gear in the front (front differential) a controlled center differential and a rear differential.

The front and read differentials must be serviced by removing the fill plug and suctioning out the fluid. Some cars have had the lower bolt on the front differential drilled out to allow it to be a drain. I never do this as you have to suction the rear diff anyway.

Once empty please use the volvo suggested fluid in your owners manual .

I think there has been a lot of discussion on this already, but when I changed mine I used mobil 1 synthetic GL-5 75w 90 gear oil. After finding and cleaning the area around the fill plugs, I sucked out the old stuff and pumped in new until it ran out of the hole in both the the rear differential and the front differential. Fyi, the front differential is also known as the bevel gear, angle gear or transfer case in these cars. The fluid pump I used I bought at sears, I think it's mity vac brand and looks like a small plastic tire pump.
