Welcome to Matthew's Volvo Site.
The oil filter on the 960 isn't in a housing. It is a throwaway cartridge which comes complete with the gasket attached.
Remove the splash guard under the engine to gain access to the filter.
The easiest way to remove the filter is with a strap specially made for the job. These aren't expensive, last forever (mine is at least 25 years old) and can be bought at any car parts store.
To install the new filter apply clean engine oil to the gasket. It doesn't need too much but ensure all of the gasket is oiled. Screw the filter into place by hand until the gasket comes into contact with the mating surface on the engine. Then a further 1/2 to 3/4 turn.
Replace the splash guard and top up the oil.

Bill, thank You for the response. When I say 'housing' I mean the entire unit that is part of the oil cooler. The cooler lines run from lower radiator hose to filter unit. This unit has 3 pieces, a large drain plug, an aluminum bottom piece, and a black plastic middle piece, then attaches to oil pan. The filter mounts horizontally on the side. I have bought 2 o-rings & 1 rubber gasket from the dealer. One small ring goes on the drain & the other I assume on the pan side. It is my large ring that is leaking. I am assuming this unit is threaded together and can be unscrewed to get to gaskets, just don't want to damage it in the process. I don't believe it would have reverse threads. I don't want to use too big a hammer!! Thanks for your time Bill. Gooday

Which filter are you talking about, engine or transmission?
Bill.
