245 1987 No brake pedal.

Post by waynej »

Just bought a 240 that had been sitting for 3 years.Got the engine running and noticed the brake pedal goes to the floor and the brake warning light comes on when pedal is depressed.Installed and bled a new master cylinder, and bled calipers.Light still comes on and pedal feels firm in beginning but will slowly go all the way down if you keep pressure on it.
Installed another new MC and bled everything. Now light stays on all the time and pedal will go all the way down if you keep pressure on it.No leaks anywhere and flex lines to calipers are not visibly expanding.
Any solutions would be greatly appreciated.

That would indicate that there is still air in the system.

Are you using a power bleeder or just pumping the pedal? I always use, and recommend, a power bleeder.

If the car is fitted with a load sensing proportioning valve that should be bled before bleeding the brakes. Some master cylinders are fitted with a bleed valve and it should be bled before the brakes.

Thanks Bill,
This doesn't feel like air. Air gives a soft pedal that will pump up.
This pedal at first feels very firm, but will very slowly sink down and pumping has no effect.
I used my power bleeder on the first new MC have not yet tried it on 2nd MC.
On 240's the proportioning valve is not near the MC, it's underneath someplace and usually very rusty. If you try loosening anything you ed up buying a new valve and lines.
I will try bleeding everything again with the power bleeder.
