The cam timing and ignition timing are preset. Some of the cam gears have minor adjustment to them.
Which timing procedure are you looking for? cams? Ignition?

Was looking to adjust the ignition timing like I have done in the past on my american cars.
This is my 1st Volvo, didn't realize it was not adjustable. With 157,000 miles it was starting to tap, thought a timing adjustment might stop that. Guess I am looking at a valve job. Or do you have any other ideas?

The timing on most new cars (including many American cars) is controlled by the cars computer.
Check and make sure your exhaust manifold bolts are tight, I have seen some come a little loose causing a valve tap like noise.
Are you using quality oil and changing your oil on time? Try an oil change with Mobile 1 Synthetic and half a can of Seafoam for 3000 miles to clean up the engines internals.
I also recommend running Seafoam through the intake to clean up the valves. (Disconnect a vacuum line AFTER the throttle body(I use the brake booster line) and suck up 1/4 to half a can at 2-3k rpms until the engines stalls, if the engine does not stall turn it off immediatly and let it sit for 5 minutes. Start the car up and enjoy the smoke show. Rev it up and take it on the highway and drive the piss out of it.)
O-rings for the oil pump are also a problem on cars that are not maintained well, the o-rings deteriorate and the oil pressure doesn't rise fast enough or keep high enough at idle thus engine tick is heard.
Do a compression test before getting a valve job. No point in wasting the money if its just a sound thats not hurting anything.
