Hi-- my rear seat driver's side (leftmost) seatbelt won't engage, i.e. it won't "click" in place, just falls back out. Any advice? thanks to all who try!

Welcome to Matthew's Volvo Site.
It isn't unknown for seat belt buckles to stop working. As they are a major safety item I would suggest that you replace the buckle. The rear seat cushion has to be removed to access the two bolts holding the buckle in place.
To remove the cushion lift the bottom edge of the end of the cushion then lift the front edge. It will be firmly attached so may take some lifting. When it is out check the retaining clips and replace any that appear damaged. Also check that the front edge of the cushion is straight.
When replacing the buckle the bolts must be tightened to 48nm.
Bill.

Maybe a stupid question but have you looked inside the buckle mechaism? Perhaps a something has fallen inside it which is preventing the latch from 'closing'. Eg a coin or piece of paper or ???

Something must have made its way inside and damaged the latch. The Volvo part number for the left rear belt catch is 30780618.
Thanks for the advice, I did take a quick look inside and didn't see any obvious obstruction, but I do intend to take a much closer look... with 4 kids God knows what might have found its way into it. If I can't get it cleared I will go ahead and replace the part, thanks to all again.
