Yup. google is EVIL. The phone in my pocket is a grandfathered 10 cents per minute flip phone, bought
& renewed with cash. They can track it but they have to do more to pin it to me.

David Webb.

Disturbing story thus week. GM has aggregated driving info amd sold it to insurance companies, who jacked rates to aggressive drivers. All done without driver knowledge. Legality? Hmmm

Data collection has been serious since 1990s. Hank Asher was one of the people who started gathering all types of data on the public for sale and use by others. The recent book 'The Hank Show - How a house painting, drug running DEA informant built the machine that rules our lives" by McKenzie Funk gives a scary look at how others gather, sell and use our data.
We can run, but hiding is near impossible.

I believe The New York Times had the recent article on car manufacturers sharing data with insurance companies to increase rates for some drivers. It was not just GM, but many manufacturers.

You can still hide in your old Volvo if you leave your phone at home. But traffic cameras may still find you.

I am not trying to alarm everyone, only inform.

Great post, VLN. Surveillance is now ubiquitous, but you don't have to opt in.

(A little off topic, but this is why I use an Apple phone. They don't sell their data, location data and otherwise. An app on it might track me, but I can choose my apps. The phone's OS isn't intrinsically part of the surveillance state we inhabit. Why is Apple different? Because they make their money from hardware and services like iCloud. Beware of all other hardware, software, and OSes, especially anything that is free. Do your homework.)

One of Hank Asher's first data collections was Department of Motor Vehicles records. In this case we paid and then the DMV sold our information.
