Actually on the seat covers, both were in what looked like amazing condition. I finally got a Messenger reply from the S70 owner and all it said was, 'Sorry been crazy busy'.

No sorry I screwed you around as it was too much bother to let you know a visit won't work, or even a proposed alternate time.

I have moved on now. And yes I would probably like the 850R if I were keeping them. Again it is a 600km round trip to see the car to be disappointed. Price is too high as well. Here is the S70 listing assuming you can access facebook marketplace. Assuming the R has sold as it has disappeared.

I thought my S70 was nice. That has no sunroof, spoiler, minor bubbles in the door panels and probably good tires and service record not to mention the beige interior. I would pay $3,500 dollars if it had no major issues. Not many Volvos let alone in that condition in my area.

Let's see, $500 one way ticket, 2,500 miles to NC besides the $2,500 for the car... about $3,500.

That was why I was interested. The $2500 is CDN, not US, so nearer $1800 US. How easy is it to get into the US? Last time I did this the US border guards were dicks and sent us back as it did not have a MPH speedo. The California Registration department told my brother it must come to them with the original unit fitted! We had to return and get a repair shop to swap it over and get a receipt they had done that swap and then come back with the receipt. They were 100% WRONG in fact as that was not the process as I confirmed when I got back after delivering the car to CA.

The harder part with a 99-00 car is you will need to get a new speedo head unit as well as a new mother board and have that programmed to the car as the VIN# and transmission type (manual/4 speed auto/5-speed auto) is stored in there as well as the mileage. If they don't match then you cannot talk to the ECU/TCU.

Security issue.

Close friend is a Canadian citizen but lives in CA now and has for a long time. He didn't have that kind of trouble when he brought over his 2002 Honda CRV. Perhaps if you owned it and the Title was in your name it would be like you were just visiting the U.S.?

I owned it for a few years. Pictures before sale in 2015.

Did is have a dual speed speedo? Many cars do, and US Volvos of the P80 cars did. Canadian P80 cars only have kph on them. The theory was to stop US buyers purchasing them at a lower Canadian price and moving them south. stupid really as US cars are typically cheaper even taking into account the exchange rate.

He purchased new in Canada and had dual speedo. Imagine what the Carfax looked like when the techs used km to log miles during inspection/reporting to DMV. Huge mileage difference on several line items. Still, perhaps if you drove it across as owner and sold it while here .

You have to officially import it when you cross the border or you will run into Customs Hades. The VIN wont show as a legally imported car, which will cause a lot of problems.

Illegally imported items get seized and destroyed. There is a large criminal activity involved importing cars with altered vins and CBP watches this closely

Whenever you read this on a blog about importing...

"or have the manufacturer send you a letter which confirms it complies with the current US requirements"

...youknow the writer has never imported anything in their life.

The chances of getting such a letter from a manufacturer is zero.
