Ah good! Let's hope your car introduces you to Ken and puts in a good word on your behalf! Nothing beats an "inside" relationship with someone at the dealer :D

One more note on the service interval light: the dealer (but not the Draper tool nor any "civilian" tool I know of unfortunately) can reprogram the light's interval. Not to be confused with merely resetting it.

I had the dealer here in Seattle (Ravenna) crank it up to the max interval, which if memory serves is 18 months/12k miles.

Default setting is lower.

Oh, okay.. so you are saying then, that they will set it for default which is more then likely what MIJ said possibly 5000mi ? I've had 3 oil changes since I've had the car, (every 3 mo), just to keep it up so far, and this is the first time the light has come on. But thanx to all you guys and your help, I know now, what is up, and what my options are, and hopefully avoid getting ripped off.

Elaine .... :D

No problem! Yeah, the default setting is 5K miles (what the owner's manual says is the oil change interval) which in my opinion should be lower (3K) unless you're going mostly highway miles and using synthetic. The dealer can change the reset interval to much higher, like Matt said- possibly it was set to that level already and that's why you are just now seeing it. Good luck!

Cool... and thanx. I live in California, hardly any highway driving, mostly stop and go street traffic, and no synthietic oil either, since I was told, in California I dont need synthetic, well at least that's what they told me each time I had the oil changed. So, hope they are right about that.
Thanx ...
Elaine..

Hiya,
Just wanted to mention I had the oil changed this weekend, and yest went to the dealer and they re-set the service light. They said my car is automatic for 5000mi. And all it cost me was a short drive and my time.
:D

You're lucky. My dealer wants $25 just to reset the light. I've saved a ton already by buying the reset tool (I change my oil about every 60 days with the amount of daily driving I have).

Yea, I'm guessing I may not be so lucky next time, but I guess I will decide on my options then. :) But yea, thankfully I was not charged.

For what it's worth: the service light comes on at 3 months/X miles. The dealer told me that for my 97 GLT, it was 3,500 miles.

I ended up taking the bulb out of the dash in mine since I do my own oil changes and got tired of the light.
