Re: 06 XC70 - Replacing RHF axle seal at transmission
Can turbo oil line seals be replaced without removing the angle gear? Wishing I had done it/them when I had the AG out.

it can be done, it helps if you have girlyman arms with universal jointed elbows.
Its usually the gasket at the top which leaks, gasket shellac glue the new gasket to cleaned pipe flange for easier positioning.
Make sure the old O ring seal at the bottom of the pipe comes out.
a coolant pipe is held to the oil drain tube by a small bracket, you need to remove the bracket,
chances of getting the bracket back in place are near zero, I just left mine off for now (now was 6 yrs ago).
Problem is you can only get one hand in that tight space so you need a tool that can reach up in there.

without angle gear for clarity.

A mechanic will probably pull the angle gear box.
If that can be done efficiently then the whole job would go easier.
Its quite a project though, book is something like 6 hours.

Makes me think that cannot be the issue as the quote is for $500. At $170/hour that is under 3 hours. I have never known Volvo to have a low time estimate on a job! I have to find time to get it up on the hoist to have a look or go back to the dealer for clarity of the issue.
My mechanic friend did mention the need to remove the angle gear if it is the axle seal in the transmission.
Thanks guys.

That is good work doing it in that time! I remember the last time I wasted over 2 hours trying to pull a used angle gear from a P80 in a junkyard, only to find it was total junk with stripped splines in the angle gear and former oil more like a semi-hardened paste!

Yeah, I did everything in this car like 5 times or more. The only original parts are some hard to reach bushings in the rear subframe and the fuel pump. Everything else was either fixed or replaced.scot850 wrote: ↑18 Jun 2023, 15:34 That is good work doing it in that time!
