You are luck you've got so many years out of your rack. I had to replace mine in 2018 at 237k miles. Bosch-ZF factory rebuilt one (comes with new tie rods, tie rod ends and boots) + lower shaft cost me only $700 back then.

MA inspection gets tougher and tougher each year. I talk to mechanic whom I use for 7 or 8 years, he says they add something new each year. He actually starts inspection with the vehicle still outside the bay. If he sees something obvious he sends you back, without spoiling car's official history.

move up to Maine, $12 inspection, kick the tires, blow the horn etc.
My exhaust is loud so i pull in with the radio blasting and windows open then shut the engine off.
Good for another year.

I will. I tend to spend all of my time off north-west of Millinocket.

Heck, move to Oklahoma.
No inspection - just run whatever you have.
Tags for 2001 car will be under $30.
Regular gas is now $2.58.
Housing is cheap.
But, there are down sides to living here.

MA has a couple of up sides.

In winter we have snow (for sure in western part of the state, in Appalachian range), warm ocean in summer. Health care and education is top. Unfortunately we need that for one kid, and perhaps for another one, too. Plenty of high-tech jobs. Beautiful northern New England and Canada is in driveable range. Plenty of craft beers (I like good pilseners and we have some!). FCP Euro is 1 hr 20 minutes away. And, unlike in New York, our clam chowder is white!

Housing is super-expensive, yes, but we managed to buy an OK house before COVID and did renovation mostly ourselves, saving hundreds of thousands, and sold our old unit at the peak of the post-COVID prices, so the house is pretty much paid off.

I'll stay here until becoming an empty nester, then retire to jonesg ;)

MA has the countries best schooling and great affordable health care. I grew up in Greater Boston but lived in the Pioneer Valley for 18 years before moving to TN. Finding engineering jobs in the electrical field was no task. I worked at Kollmorgen for 18 years and Teradyne for 9 years.

I sold my 1500 sq ft house in Northamptin for triple the price I paid for my 2000 sq ft house on a 20 acre lot down here in TN. I built my own 2 car garage and a 40 x 60 shop. Being non residential and in the county no permit was needed for the shop.

I don't miss those MA car inspections. They got strict several years ago when shops had to add those darn cameras. No auto inspections in TN.

Let’s get the important things down!

Red chowder, blech. But the pizza in NY can’t be beat

After reading all this I am getting a little concerned about my older daughter. She lives in Boston (loves it), and based on my recommendation she just bought a super clean 03' V70 2.4T in December. A one owner car, purchased and serviced at Boston Village Volvo for most of it's life.

The car failed inspection due to worn tie rods. No big deal, I replaced them, and she just had the alignment done. Now she has to get the inspection done again.
I so hope this doesn't become a financial nightmare for her with these tough inspections. Are these good for one year only?

Thanks, Dirk

yeh every year.
as long as you stay away from the dealership they're cost effective to own.
My v70 passed insp, but a tire place informed me the tie rods were due, when i pulled them they were bent !
Use OEM parts .
