Hi all - apologies for not posting a resolution on this. The AC system was totally empty - hooked up the vacuum pump and let it run for an hour or so, then refilled. The fan no longer turns on at odd times - must have been the AC pressure.

1996 850 NA, victim of sporadic tree falling. Protected the wife. RIP Volvo
