Broken retaining clip on CV joint - 1997 850

I don't think the axle has any problems, I think it's just the outer CV joint that needs replacing.

I did not check the hub bearing, I've not heard any noises except when turning and going very slowly like on a parking lot so that did not occur to me.

But given the look of the CV joints insides I wasn't hopeful, those wear marks I showed are not just visual marks on the surface, but physical dimples you can easily feel with your fingers.

I’ve scraped off pitted metal on CVs with a file and reused them. They are really overengineered especially if you drive on decent roads, where they don’t get crazy articulation.

On the wheel bearings. I had a strange noise from the from of my 2000 V70R last year. Wheel bearings seemed ok, but on replacing the LHF one the noise went away, only for a new noise on the other side which was the carrier bearing failing. As the axle was out I replaced the bearing as well as I had it already. There was no classic left turn noise or RH noise when turning.

It was Abscate that convinced me to replace the bearing after many hours of head scratching. They did not display the typical failure noises.

The car is pretty much silent when driving straight ahead and when not turning too hard a corner. If you let it coast through the corner it won't make the sound either, just if the engine is driving the wheels.

An F.A.G. CV joint kit is only 32 euros so it's not a lot of money for a new quality replacement. Reason I did not replace it was I needed the car, went on a 250km roundtrip.

Well hopefully replacing it with a Fag CV outer joint fixes the problem, and at that price it is a good deal. Should be straight forward at least as you just did this recently.
