All in all, the P2 is better.
Tstat, Wahler $100 but Facet brand is $55. The reason it is more expensive bc the Tstat and ECT are sold as a combo. Not a big deal bc you only do this once every 100K .
VVT...this is what gives this car power. I wrote DIY in forum.
Axle quality same as before, made by GKN.
PEM is cheap on eBay...around $35 for used unit. Bc of PEM, you don't replace the fuel pump as in the P80.
P2 is a good solid car, but I'd advise ppl to buy it at ~ 100K miles. It is out there, you just have to search for it. It should give you another 100K of service.

They dropped lifters for tappets somewhere around 98, yes.cn90 wrote: 02 Mar 2026, 08:42 My previous 1998 S70 burned an exhaust valve #3 at 178K miles. Then the Auto Trans reverse solenoid was kaput at 180K miles. Both of these jobs are high labor/high cost, even if I DIY. So, I traded it in at a used car dealer for $500 and bought a 2004 V70.
This is why I usually by the P2 at ~100K bc this is a sweet spot...the 1st or the 2nd owner sees the timing belt job coming up and just wants to get rid of it.
At 180K-200K miles, it is like an 80-year-old person, anything can happen, not much "life" remaining lol...
Someone told 2.4 is still hydraulic lifters, even on P2? That, and barely ever clogging PCV, would make it run till the compression rings wear out.

OP is asking about relative costs to own, not why we like P2 cars (we do!) or whether they are solid (they are!) etc.cn90 wrote: 02 Mar 2026, 08:48 All in all, the P2 is better.

Yes, we all agree, tstat more expensive on P2, plus more annoying to change.
VVT hub has a function, yes. We know how to change them, yes. But the point is they wear out and cost like $300 to replace; VVT hub is not an expense on P80 cars because they don't have them.
The P2 cars have tripod axles. A tripod is supposed to be "better" but the fact is these CVs fail more frequently than the roller-ball CVs on p80 cars. Of course they are still GKN that's not the point. On a P80 car the CVs will last as long as you are willing to keep changing the boots.
Fuel pumps still fail, unfortunately. The P2 fuel pump is twice the cost of a P80 fuel pump and much more difficult to replace. I've had the fuel pump die on two different P2 cars but not had to replace a PEM yet. Again, the bottom line is there is an additional part that does wear out and need replacing.
Don't forget cam solenoids - routine expense on P2 cars. And the fuel pressure sensor, brake booster pump, etc ...
Unfortunately it's not even close, P80 costs less to maintain, especially a FWD P80. Too bad the P80 is basically aging out

XC90 has no tripods. Overlanders swap their XC70 axles out with these beefier ones.erikv11 wrote: 02 Mar 2026, 10:43OP is asking about relative costs to own, not why we like P2 cars (we do!) or whether they are solid (they are!) etc.cn90 wrote: 02 Mar 2026, 08:48 All in all, the P2 is better.

Erik...you spread misinformation re P80 vs P2...
OP asked about cost. I discussed costs.
- Tstat: difference in cost between P2 vs P80 is miniscule.
- Emission system is handled by VVT, so no need for the stupid Air Pump from 1998 S70.
- CV axle, same design of Tripod etc. for years, same company GKN.
No difference between P80 vs P2. A new CV boot every 120K keeps the axles going forever.
- VVT hub slight wear at 120K. No need to replace VVT if one installs a deeper seal (9 mm vs 7 mm), or flip the seal around. I wrote the tricks in the VVT DIY.
- Fuel Pump in P2 lasts much longer than P80.
- Cam solenoids last a long time if one changes oil properly.
For me, the costs of maintenance are very similar.
I don't miss the P80 cars...

I agree that cam solenoids rarely fail. I have north of 200k miles driven combined on P2s, never had an issue with VVT solenoid. I replaced the gaskets with mesh filter in them, yes.
VVT fails well past 200k. It can be mechanically repaired (shimmed) if you're broken, but handy.
Fuel pump problems is usually PEM module located on the belly. There's TSB for relocating it into trunk. Replacing the fuel pump with sender (AWD) is not a big deal either.
Both tripod axles I have replaced, but they are 100k miles old now, with many-many miles on the gravel, and they are still as smooth as when they were new. One is GKN, one is Volvo. Loosing grease due to torn boot or using incorrect grease is what kills them. What you get in the box with GKN boot kit - don't use it, it is a wrong grease that will kill tripods.

Whoo! Spicy up in here
Yeah I think Ill stick to p80. Electronic stuff listed in a lot of those responses. Im an oldie even though Im only 30. I appreciate easy ecu and trans swaps, drive-by-cable (not wire), no complicated key making, no vvt. Crazy solenoids this, more electronics that. I suppose yall helped me figure it out then. Thank yall.

My 2005 p2 will consistently run >30 mpg on the highway which is hard to get out of a p80,especially if you boost
Iβm going to say a 20% lift on mpg or 20% lower fuel cost. Another $200 in your pocket each year
