Hopefully you can find a good used axle. Even if the cv boots are torn they can be replaced. If they are torn, try to check if there is any grease left in the boot and if it is full of dirt or sand. The grease is very sticky so wear disposable gloves to do that! Do the GKN axles have a warranty? Maybe worth checking.
