If the switch is not lighting up then it is either a bad switch or it came unplugged. I had the switch go bad on mine a few weeks ago but on an 850 it is a separate part. The bad news is that on a S70 Volvo doesn't call the switch out as its own subassembly. If the switch is bad you must replace the whole control head.
Checking the connections is easy, remove the radio (you do have your code don't you?) and make sure that both connectors are plugged into the back of the climate control head.
A good way to test the theory is to hot wire the compressor and see if it engages and blows cold.
Do you have electronic climate control or is it the manual version? I see them on eBay from time to time for not a ton of money.

Follow up to my above post here are pictures ot the lead that you connect your juper wire to. Again, don't know if this is the best way to do it, but it worked for me the last two years.
