Is your 240 a DL with the single carb? If so you probably disconnected the anti-diesel valve (idle solinoid). In older cars this valve can malfunction and leak which can cause a high or irratic idle. There is no problem disconnecting it, but the carb will need mixture and idle speed readjusted. There will also be an increased chance the engine will diesel when shut off.

I went to Chiltons to find the photo and it is the air control valve. I have fuel injection. There are about 5 wires that connect to it and I cut the one that had the same effect on it as when I disconnected all five. I had to fake smog out. The 5 wire plug was connected, but that one wire cut inside the wrap.
