I had a similar issue except it was my water pump that failed and caused the timing belt to break. I had a 20 valve engine and 10 of the valves were bent. What ever valve was open when the cam stoped trurning ,gets hit by the piston and when that happens, the valve gets bent. When you get the head off,(cam out) all the valve are closed. Spray carb cleaner into the intake port and exhaust port. If the fluid leaks through to the other side of the cylinder head,then the valve is bent. The liquid should not seep through at all.
It would be easier and cheaper if you can find a used cylinder head. I've seen them on ebay for around $150. If you buy the valves seperate it will be a lot more.
