I'm on a real learning curve now. I have found that there is a combu heater with manual controls and no AC; manual controls with AC and auto controls with AC. The heater unit without combu is manual controls without AC.

My friendly Volvo tech had not heard of combu. As he put it, "There are 3 heaters, the fancy one with the auto controls and AC, the not so fancy one with the manual controls and AC and the bog standard one that heats the car in winter and is a total waste of space in warm weather."

So I still don't know what combu means and I don't really care.

Hooray! It was nice today, so I removed the glovebox and invested $2 in a tube of graphite lock lube. The slide now goes almost all the way to the right and I once again have heat and defrost.

Thanks to all for your input!
