It sounded like the clunking noise came from the rear but it ended up being the bevel angle gear at the transmission where the propeller shaft attaches. If you jack the car up,grab the propeller shaft and shake it , see if there is play where it enters the bevel gear. I ended up making my AWD car into a two wheel drive.
Interesting, but that wouldn't make just one wheel lock up.
My money is still on e-brake bits and pieces tumbling around
in the rotor/drum like malicious bricks in an old Maytag.

Pull those drums!

Thanks to an all day and late into the evening effort Tuesday by Willie at Coventry (CT) Automotive, the 98 XC70 is back on the road. It WAS a sudden failure of the right rear wheel ebrake system. Not clear what went flying first, but the collateral damage included a broken ebrake drum casting on the inside of the brake disc, and a torn caliper boot. Parts hanging up in the broken drum casting were probably causing the wheel lockup we experienced when troubleshooting in the driveway.

Willie's finely tuned ears also detected an abnormal amount of engine vibration at idle and on acceleration which was due to a collapsed engine mount on the front of the block. I had noted some roughness of late, but did not realize how bad it was until I drove the car after the fix. Amazingly smooth now! With the collapsed mount, the engine was basically sitting solid against the subframe.

Also had a really bad left front lower control arm ball joint - again car now much tighter post-fix.

No sign of VC or BG damage. Thank you Lord for that!
