And to reply to the original post, what is the actual oil pressure that the pump puts out? Before they replace anything they need to read the pressure to see if what they fixed actually made a difference.

If there is good oil flow coming out of the pump the only thing that makes pressure is the resistance to flow. It scares me to hear about sludge in the engine. This means there could be worn parts. i.e. if the crank and cam journals are worn, oil now leaks out faster creating less resistance and low oil pressure. I get the feeling that the engine may be worn to the point that it cannot keep pressure.Glück.

Dear All,
What I have learned from my experience with my S60 2001, is that the oil pressure sensor is very sensitive and reacts to minimum variations in oil pressure. First, I took apart the Oil Pan and put a new Gasket (it is a liquid one that gets hard after a while) before puting in place the oil pan again: the problem dissapeared for a couple of days. Then, I changed oil filter, filter housing and o'rings, for new ones and the problem finally dissapeared!!. A week ago, I changed oil and filter and going at 75 mph (115 kph) the warning light came on. I stopped, check for licks, nothing; tighten filler cap, check dipstick, and continued my trip with no problem at all.
Again, check every posible place where oil could lick pressure: filter housing and dipstick o'rings, oil pan and filler cap gaskets, and so on.... I am sure you will find the problem...!

friend2fly, your car has an oil cooler onthe back of oil pan. It would be easy to check it for obstructions in the oil circuit. Requires draining oil and coolant and removing it.
If the engine was ever sludged up a bit the stuff may be partly blocking the oil cooler. High flow at high revs may be packing it in the internal fins and it backwashes when engine is off and is good again until it packs in once more.
Still could be an issue elsewhere that is only showing when oil gets hot enough to get thin enough for pressure to drop.

Has a guage EVER been hooked up to the block to determine the accuracy of your oil pressure sensor?

jimmy57s experience on these fives is what has saved me countless times. He always comes up with odd solutions that are not in the realm of experience of other users.

You know I chased one one time that would turn on the low oil pressure warning when started on a very cold morning and driven off in seconds or warmed up and revved.
It was checked and oil pressure would be fantastic.
After it was checked a few times the pressure switch was changed and it was repaired. I took the old switch apart and didn't find anything but did figure out the switch looked far more complicated than need be.

Many thanks for the information and suggestions. One rather worrying comment from my Volvo dealer is that the joint between the intermediate section and what is above it appears to have been sealed with black liquid gasket insted of the pink Volvo supplied liquid gasket. Is it a very big job to get at the intermediate section?
I will certainly try the oil cooler cleaning, Thanks again everybody, Alan

Removed the oil cooler and checked, nice and clean, no sludge.

I think I have run out of things to check now.

The oil pump was suggested by one member so I
may try that next, or just give up and scrap it.

Volvo dealer said the cold oil pressure at idle was 30psi

Thanks for all your efforts, Alan
