Yikes, good point... I wouldn't mix them either. Here's moderator MadeInJapan's outstanding Volvo 850/S70/V70/XC70/C70 Transmission Fluid Flush tutorial, and although it is for <=2000 Volvos, in it he specifically addresses P2 cars (yours, 2001+).

I'd like to stress everything I -- and the MVS moderators -- reference here at MVS is to be taken as a guide and as opinion, only. You are responsible for your car.

Not aimed specifically at you, 2001VolvoXC70, just want to make that clear from time to time. Especially when the subject involves 2001 transmissions :).
Help keep MVS on the web -> click sponsors' links here on MVS when you buy from them.

TCM software upgrade 30677036 is referenced in TechNote TNN43-42-2003-12-12. It corrects a 2-3 upshift flare irregularity that might be felt as a transmission slip under quick acceleration.

While I am not a big fan of BG products (there are plenty of other more cost effective lubes & greases, etc), they claim their Synthetic ATF is Type-IV and 3309 compatible. They probably reversed engineered the product, just like Castrol and all the others. I doubt they paid royalties to Aisin-Warner to get the JWS3309 specification, though.

Remember, too, that 3309 is backwards compatible with most modern ATFs but the converse it not true.

I doubt very much that their ATF will hurt your tranny in any way. If it's shifting fine, don't worry about it.

Called Volvo today and they said that although the 116540 and bg 312 are different products, they are compatible. Synthetic is recommended and he also believed that the bg is a better product. Thanks for the spec sheet and all your input

+1 on BG universal synthetic trans fluid. It holds its color and viscosity longer than 1161540. Have flushed hundreds of AW50/55 transmissions since 2003 without fail due to the fluid. I dont like dealerships that use aftermarket parts without telling the customer first. A lot of them do it and is B.S. mine does too. filters, wipers, spring seats it goes on. Only Volvo should come from Volvo. BGprod.com is their site.

Thanks voltech1, I have a better piece of mind now with that fluid in the system. The tranny IS shifting a bit abnormal at times, but it was doing it also with the OEM oil so I don't think it is going to make much difference if I change it back to the 3309 stuff.

I think I should change the bevel oil and check the status of the b4 servo first.

I have an V70 XC 2001, and changing the transmission fluid. I am unaware of when, or if the transmission oil filter has been changed, as I have just bought the car.

As I am not close to any Volvo repair stores, is changing the filter a must do? or is there a way we can rinse it, and re-use? Or, is it not of any concern at all?

Also I have located the drain position for the transmission, but I have not been able to locate the supply or return hose which takes the fluid out of the transmission and into the cooling radiator and back again. Where is this located, or will that automatically drain itself?

Thanks...

these trannies do not have a replaceable filter.
The hose used for the flush is the one that comes out of the radiator, has green clip.

If your has a lot of miles, I would recommend you do the drain and fill procedure. This way, 4 quarts drain and you refill with 4 quarts. Then repeat the procedure 500 and 1000 miles later.
