That's a bad place? The 850 receiver was below the right A pillar at glove box level.VCA wrote:The Volvos of that generation have the receiver in a terrible place -- behind/on top of the instrument cluster. Alas, my S70 also gets about 10-15 feet for range and that's it (embarrassingly, the 960 gets better range). The P2s all have it in the UEM (mirror), except the C70. The P3s (07- S80/V70/XC60) either have the RRX (for cars without keyless) in the headliner or the KVM (for cars with keyless/PCC) has a network of antennas to choose from (one in each door handle, one in the trunk, and two inside).jblackburn wrote:The range on my car is terrible too; it will work at most 10 ft away. It must be something about the frequencies Volvo uses.
To make matters worse, the cars of that era use 314MHz for remote keyless entry, which doesn't reach that far. The PCCs on the P3 cars use 902.16 MHz and 903.575 MHz (for two-way communication at up to 100m in clear space), which is a) relatively uncrowded and b) a frequency with a farther throw.
Up high in the dash pad makes good sense to me. I get 40-50 feet easily.
With the chin trick, it goes 80-100 feet with no problem.
