Additional symptoms -- Went to start today. In the past few weeks the car had been missing and the check engine light was on, but it would still start (except for the occasional total no go). Now when I attempt to start it, it fired up with an incredibly rough idle then died. On attempting to restart, seems the rough idle is interfering with its ability to start/run.

I think the problem is solved. On the advice of my retired Volvo mechanic friend on my most recent no start condition, I took a set of jumper cables and went from the negative battery terminal to a bolt on the block. Car started right up thereby confirming that my on-the-cheap fix to the negative battery cable was not working full time. I have already obtained a replacement cable and will be installing same today. Thanks for all of your advice/suggestions.

Last evening's test drive confirmed problem solved. . . for now.
