Interesting, so most cases in this thread were just the steering wheel lock was putting too much pressure or the mechanism was sticky, plus documented one case (chrism) of worn tumbler pins.
Probably the broken nub that cn90 was posting about is a problem limited to the older cars, maybe it is a P80 thing or maybe it is more common when the cars get closer to 20 years old.

My 04 XC90 did this to me yesterday, I went to start it, key wouldn’t turn, steering wheel was locked. The same thing had happened with my 96 850 GLT a few times.
Thankfully the solution was get out of the car and lock then unlock the doors twice with the key (I don’t have fobs for either car) and this disengaged a security system feature that locks the steering wheel to help prevent theft.
Sure enough, it started right up again!

Ignition tumbler got stuck today. Car was in the driveway, thankfully! The keys (either one) would go in fine but not turn from position 0. The steering wheel was not locked as just over 5 years ago I Dremel'ed off the bottom plate and removed the metal bits as per the common fix.
So tonight I pulled the steering column plastics to have a look at that repair and everything looked fine from underneath, no idea why it was jammed. Messed with it for like 15 minutes, no joy.
Then I went to the forum, saw the above post from eibhlin77 and tried their great suggestion - locked and unlocked with the fob. Voila! Fixed it immediately.
