Just bought my first 850- Mileage is surprising!

Post by paulklee »

After looking for a long time I found a '95 850 Turbo wagon for $2400 that I liked

I love the handling and the acceleration - I have had a turbo in a long time and it IS fun!

The body looks really sweet and is in great shape

HOWEVER- a few disappointments

the mileage I've been getting is not what I was told - The seller said he got @19 local and 24 highway

I have been getting 14.5 mostly around town - it goes through a 60$ tank of gas very fast

Also the engine feel at idle reminds me of old cars I used to have that had engine problems

Does anyone have any suggestions re: getting better mileage?

Thanks!

To be sure your town driving isn't under different conditions than the previous driver I would judge gas mileage over a longer run (highway run) and compare.

A couple of things that come to mind are condition of plugs, cleanliness of injectors (Techron is recommended by most knowledgeable members of this board), cleanliness of throttle body, air filter, and compression that the motor achieves (a B5234T should be leaning toward 156 psi minimum for a warm engine)

I would lean toward taking a compression check first before replacing a string of items that could be OK. Most of us have been following this thread for a while now and boy did this guy have to deal with some issues:

Pls let us all know how you go.

If you have good plugs, filters, etc, clean the MAF. Makes a big difference in my experience. Also, clean the throttle body. I once had a huge problem where the mileage was down below 14 and the motor was gas starved under strong accelleration. This was due to a split fuel line in the gas tank after the fuel pump, so most of the fuel was actually pumped back into the tank. It took quite a while to find that little problem.

Good luck.

Thanks for the great input!

Can anyone tell me what's involved in a compression test or much it should cost?

Is there a video anyone might know of that shows the removal of a MAF and cleaning?

After reading some other posts I am worried that the MPG I'm getting is sort of 'normal'!

But I love how this wagon rides so I guess it's worth it!

Interesting note ( i hope)

Nothing solved on the MPG issue with the '95 850- BUT I did clean the MAF sensor today - not enough miles to judge if improved mileage or not - However- the lack of vibration at idle is strikingly different than before!
Very pleased with that! And for the cost of a can of MAF cleaner I am even more pleased!

Thanks to all for the input

quick comment-

cleaning MAF (just sprayed MAF cleaner on it and the connections) and the difference in idle vibration is amazing!

Much improved ( although no MPG improvement yet)

still working on it!

thanks for all the input
