My post was all about how to avoid doing the rivet part.

As odd as it sounds, I have been re-greasing pulleys for some 25 years using this "imperfect" technique (clean out old grease, apply new grease). Not ideal but better than dried grease.
Old grease does not mean it is bad, it is just old grease.

Many pulleys last more than 200K.

Of course, if you have money, buy new pulleys.

I have nothing against regreasing bearings. I've been doing it for years on large format printers, but I always use blue Castrol disc brake rated bearing grease & have a spare bearing handy in case I damage the delicate grease cap which can leak its contents in no time if not properly resealed.
