Your 'new' mechanic is correct, cheap replacement parts are not worth the money or the labor to install. Do not kid yourself when you ask for a lot of money for a car that needs a new rack and control arm.

If you didn't want your son to drive this safe car to college, what are your alternatives? An unknown piece of junk? Volvo used cars are probably the most devalued and best deals on the market. All of the safety that is in 5 year old cars are in the 1998.

I bought my daughter a 2008 Outback to take to school for her senior year. But her artwork was 4 feet wide and didn't fit into a V70.

If I had a larger garage, I could have more Volvos.

Thank you Thank you Thank you to everyone who responded to get it fixed.
I had it fixed today and just drove it home. WHAT A DIFFERENCE! The steering is fantastic. It's light enough and comes right back to center after you turn. $925 for a used Volvo rack, new Volvo control arm, alignment and labor. He showed me the old parts and cracked rack, and explained why you don't use just any parts.

The next things he said I should think about are lower motor mounts $450, upper torque mount $95, turbo tube seals $80. All Volvo parts and includes labor. He did say however I don't need any of this now, just wait awhile, maybe late summer. Anyway I can sleep knowing he's driving a safe car. Thanks again everyone.

13 years for one of these is just a breakin period. They are built to last.

Really glad to hear you decided to get it fixed. These are great cars that are worth investing in keeping them on the road.

If you sold the V70 it would have become somebody else's goldmine and possibly another new MVS member. These cars are not thrown away!!

Look into the repair boards here for the motor mount replacements; they're really not that hard to do.
Current cars VW Transporter 2.5TDI, 2010 XC90 D5 R Design
