acetone is pretty harsh against paint but you'd have to be careful.

If you can confirm that you do NOT have ckearcoat you might consider 1200 grit wet sanding it, then polishing the remaining paint.

While working as an employee for Volvo Corp. I had 3 850s; a Red wagon; a black T-5 and the white 850-R. All of them are/were clearcoated from Factory. I picked the black T-5 up at the port in LA. The red wagon had 36 miles on it when I picked it up at the dealer. The white one (R-855) was purchased from a fellow employee who planned to keep it but decided on a new Carrerra instead.

Oh! Another way to get rid of paint for sure is using brake fluid!!! Maybe not the safest way, but if you are very, very careful it will strip that paint right off! (and nail polish, epoxy floor tiles, etc.)

I notices some penny size rust spots under carriage, where coat/paint has come off. Could I use the very old brake fluid (never opened-wrong dot grade) to clean up rust after wire brushing it, and then touch-up with RustOleum?

1997-850 body paint is coated with some thing, if not clear-coat, roof has tiny-small and penny size blister like surface.
